The most important thing to remember about what to wear is to be yourself! If your family doesn’t wear matching white t-shirts and jeans in everyday life, then I wouldn’t recommend then for your photo session! Instead, try to find outfits that are unique but compliment one another.
For maternity sessions, above all make sure you are comfortable. A tank top layered with a cardigan, a flowing dress… whatever you choose, just make sure that it fits you well. Try not to wear black or bold patterns.
For children, I recommend good fitting clothes in bolder colours. Children’s Place, the GAP, Old Navy and the Joe line at Superstore all have great selections for children.
For adults, avoid clothing with logos that will distract or date your photos. Avoid all white or all black “matchy matchy” outfits. Remember that accessories (scarves, jewellery, headbands) can really add to your overall look.
Don’t forget about your nails – trimming for the men and fresh polish for the ladies!
Also be sure to try on your outfit before your session – there’s nothing worse than finding out something doesn’t fit an hour before your session time!
There are some great resources on what to wear online. I’ve created a Pinterest board with some ideas – take a peek!
